Surrounded by more than 250 peaks of three thousand meters, the ice Q Restaurant, with 14 points and 1 toque in the Gault Millau Guide 2019, is the highest award-winning restaurant in Austria. Whether weddings, family celebrations, company anniversary or exclusive board meetings – at more than 3,000 m above sea level, every event becomes a great moment.
The new Gaislachkoglbahn on the number one skiing mountain has since that very day been setting new trends in the global transport sector. It impresses with its transport capacity of 3,600 passengers per hour and in terms of design and technology. It is also one of the highest located 3S cable cars in the world.
STYLE
A masterpiece of contemporary architecture
A dream of glass facades and pure steel meets rock and ice. A symbiosis created by human hand at 3,048 metres altitude. Nestling in a realm of majestic mountain peaks, the ice Q restaurant sparkles like a gem. Perfect shapes which fit in with the silhouette of the Gaislachkogl. The interior of this alpine gourmet restaurant in Sölden is stylish. With uninterrupted views to the breathtaking backdrop of the Ötztal Alps visible via the 900 m² all-encompassing glass facade. Nothing detracts from the magical moments of freedom you enjoy above the clouds.
Renowned architects’ office, Obermoser, who were involved in the construction of the Gaislachkoglbahn in 2010, have, with ice Q, created a 4.5 million Euro monument which is worthy of note. Energy-efficient thanks to its triple-glazing and heat recovery system. Completely built on Permafrost, which was no easy task. To counter the settling and movement of the ice base, Bergbahnen Sölden had to construct adjustable and movable foundations. The entire construction area of ice Q spans an impressive 4500 cubic metres.
HISTORY
It was in 1966 that bold pioneers made the mighty Gaislachkogl accessible via cable car. In the same year tourism visionaries recognised the potential of this unique summit – and without further ado constructed the first restaurant on it. Some 50 years were then to pass until the old restaurant building was to experience the unique sunrise on the Gaislachkogl for the last time in late summer 2012. It was then torn down. Shortly afterwards building work began on a new, ambitious project with a catchy name – ice Q. In December of the same year the exclusive gourmet restaurant at 3,048 metres opened its doors – and since that time has been providing delicious food, sophisticated wines from around the world and a breathtaking view across the valley of three-thousand metre mountains. The restaurant ice Q has 130 seats inside, 82 seats on the terrace and a roof-top terrace which enjoys panoramic views.
JAMES BOND
James Bond discovered ice Q on the Gaislachkogl mountain peak as an exclusive filming location in Tyrol. In January and February 2015 Daniel Craig alias James Bond and five hundred of his colleagues and film crew came to Sölden – the hotspot of the Alps. And it is little wonder – barely anywhere else is there a more spectacular venue.
The abundant snow and the glacier tunnel provided a noteworthy setting for the action-packed pursuits. This is something director Sam Mendes was aware of – and the valley of the three-thousand metre mountains, as Ötztal is often called, without further ado, became the backdrop for key and speedy action scenes in the blockbuster. The gourmet restaurant ice Q at 3,048 metres altitude was not only significant as a luxurious dining area for the actor. The futuristic architecture also had a key role to play in the film – but not as a gourmet restaurant, but as a futuristic clinic, where Bond’s opposite Christoph Waltz got up to evil doings.
